E-LEARNING IN COMPUTER MEDIATED COMMUNICATION SYSTEM: ISSUES AND CHALLENGES FOR FUTURE LIBRARIANSHIP

Digital skills competency and providing value based services in e-learning environment to the learners both in-house and distance mode has become crucial for the libraries in the changing scenario of higher education. Librarians in the midst of globalization of education, availability, acquiring and managing abundant literature especially in digital form on Internet domain including prevailing of multidimensional research reports required reshaping the resource collections to meet the varied demands of the e-learners and in the process, the notion of the librarian changed from document manager to document provider and subsequently to knowledge disseminator, network manager, technology manager, cybrarian, etc. Moreover, the prevailing technologies in libraries altered the learning horizon especially among the students through e-learning which is synonymously represented as web-based learning, digital learning, Internet learning, On-line learning etc. and such learning procedure solely rests on e-resources. This is the upshot of the change management in learning environment which shifted from traditional to blended and then to electronic. Strategic changes of the libraries in its service in the present days of education system, rather concentrated to uphold the value of the library for sustainable development. A true value of learning wheel, the future librarianship is going to witness encapsulating required skills and competencies in view of unconditional prevailing of ICT in every stage of its operation like, acquisition, organization, dissemination and preservation of knowledge for yielding new horizon in service domain. Skill development being the major and indispensable criteria in such a pervasive change, there is no way out than to accept the challenges unhesitatingly and shoulder the responsibilities in facilitating services in future librarianship.

PERSPECTIVES OF PROTOTYPE LIBRARY SYSTEM: ISSUES AND CHALLENGES IN FUTURE LIBRARIANSHIP

Libraries ever since the first light of civilization have proved to be a realistic value in promoting teaching, education and research. In the doorsill of information and communication technologies, the libraries and information centers have changed their services in manifold dimensions which further precipitated to a drastic change with regards to knowledge acquisition, organization, distribution, knowledge representation etc. Consequent upon the application of information and communication technology not only shaped the traditional libraries in its organization, management and optimization of use of resources but also germinated the concept of digital library which otherwise can be identified as intelligent library. With the diligence of artificial intelligence in the field of library services heuristics knowledge could be identified, elicited, codified, formalized in the knowledge base. This paper discusses about the application of intelligent technologies applied in the digital library for providing multidimensional effective library services and challenges in future librarianship

CHANGING DIMENSIONS OF LIBRARY SERVICES IN ICT ERA

Technology has been recognized as a powerful and indispensable tool for widening the frontier of library services and professional development. The technology based library services is connoted to digital transformation which does not confine to the technology use only but also it is about the utilizing the technology to empower the library professionals and the users also. Its’ impact has been seriously felt in library and information services due to the uprising demands from the users with regard to resources in electronic form and more particularly in view of the availability of versatile and abundant information in electronic form which caused  various enigmas to perceive the relevant, trustworthy information for the libraries. Hence, to meet the constant, challenging and versatile demands of the user community due to multidimensional learning, inter-disciplinary research etc., the technologies were recognized as a driving force in the libraries. In such a situation, only option left out for the library is to convert the digital library and accept the change in a challenging way. The digital library is a solution not only for quality dissemination of knowledge in a network environment but also a viable podium for storage of information for future use. In the networking sphere, the Internet made a constructive contribution to establish the true image of Digital Libraries in shape of electronic storage of information, retrieval, document delivery, accessing of information through various databases, inter-library-loan, acquisition, price control transfer of files, transfer of information etc. The library professionals in such an altering scenario compromise in spite of resistances and provide support to both in-house and distance learners with resources. This paper discusses the application of intelligent technologies in various dimensions of library services and capacity building of the library professionals in a changing environment.

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF E-RESOURCES: ISSUES AND CHALLENGES FOR LIBRARIANS IN DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT

User centric collection development has become pragmatic in the libraries to provide effective service and for that, the library needs to formulate a changed policy in view of the altering information needs of the users. Taking the ground realities in to account, the need of the patrons from traditional to electronic form needs to be protected and for sustainable support in teaching and research. The paper throws light on some of the important components of the collection development and highlights the importance of the same for implementation in the libraries. This is, however, challenging which require embracing by the librarian and other authorities for accomplishment to keep the face value of the library in the digital environment.

CAPACITY BUILDING IN FUTURE LIBRARIANSHIP IN E-LEARNING: ISSUES AND CHALLENGES

Catering value based services in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) umbrella in e-learning environment to the educators, learners both in-house and distance mode has become crucial for the libraries which is not only challenging but also imminent to meet the users’ demand. Librarians in the midst of globalization of education, availability of mammoth literature on Internet domain, prevailing of multidimensional research required to reshape the resource collection to meet the varied demands of the patrons and in the process the notion of the librarian changed from document manager to document provider and subsequently to knowledge disseminator, network manager, technology manager, cybrarian, etc. A true value of learning wheel, the future librarianship is going to witness encapsulating required skills and competencies in view of unconditional prevailing of ICT in every stage of its operation like, acquisition, organization, dissemination and preservation of knowledge for yielding to new horizon in service domain. Again, capacity building and skill development being the major and indispensable criteria in such a dynamic change, the librarian needs to accept the challenges in spite of all resistances and the responsibilities in facilitating services in next generation of librarianship.

MAGNITUDE AND ACTIVITIES OF KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND IT’S APPLICATION IN 21ST CENTURY LIBRARIES

Application of ICT in manifold directions not only altered the horizons of library services but also document management irrespective of the types which practically precipitated the term information management. It was further altered to a new and recent expression idiom known as knowledge management with the proliferation of information through web. Knowledge in true sense of the term is categorized into three types such as, Explicit Knowledge, Embedded Knowledge and Tacit Knowledge. Knowledge Management has become a new research area in comparison to other research areas such as data processing, information management, and network management. The innermost assignment of a library is to accumulate, systematize, preserve, and endow with access to knowledge and information. To arrive to this gigantic mission the libraries requires preserving valuable records of culture that can be passed down to succeeding generations. Libraries through out the ages have proved to be essential link in this communication among past, present, and future. Libraries ensure for preservation of recorded knowledge whether print or electronic for effective dissemination of knowledge when required. The paper discusses various activities involved in information management and knowledge management including its creation, impetus on library services and technological issues

IMPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND ITS’ TOOLS IN TECHNOLOGY BASED ACADEMIC LIBRARIES

ICT applications in Library and Information Service domain not only altered the library services but also opened avenues for document management leading thereby, propagation of the term information management and subsequently to knowledge management with the proliferation of information on web. Explicit, Embedded and Tacit, the three panoptic group of knowledge has predominant impact in libraries. Arriving to the massive missions like, accumulation, systematic organisations, preservation and effective dissemination of knowledge, the libraries require adequate professional competencies along with infrastructures. Preservation of knowledge and its management from valuable records of culture connect to succeeding generations and the Libraries through out the ages have proved to be essential intermediary in establishing communication among past, present, and future. Further, it adopts multiple knowledge management tools to ensure preservation of knowledge both in print or electronic. The paper discusses various dimensions and activities involved in information management and knowledge management including its creation, impetus on library services and technological issues including various knowledge management tools for effective organization of knowledge and its dissemination.
